I watched it and liked it. Still, it seemed like there was a lot that couldn't be covered well enough in a movie.

I watched this video of Rebecca Miller reading from the book and it seemed a lot more interesting.

You're right, that was far more interesting than that scene from the film.

Watched it yesterday evening. Very solid but quiet indy pic with great performances all over. As this movie is about Pippa and mostly in flashbacks - Winona's part Sandra is "only" part of the current time - Winona is in about 10 minutes of the movie. But her character plays a vital part to the story - but I don't tell as I don't wanna ruin the fun for you.

Winona plays great the wrestched mess Sandra - IMO the best acting since GI. Sandra is and egocentric attention-seeker while also beeing insecure and quiet unable to live a live on her own. If anything goes wrong she bursts into tears. She's also doing that during conflict - avoiding fights or arguments by lying sobbing at your feet and threatening to harm herself.

A very nice turn also from Alan Arkin - but from time to time I had to think of him as Winona"s "father" from Edward Scissorhands. But sadly the track and field scene with Pippa and Sandra we've seen as storyboard was "only" animated - would have made a "bouncy" life action scene......I know - I'm just a man.... Tongue

The film includes heavy drug-use and some BDSM sequences - got a 15 rating in the UK - but will definetly get R in the US.

Yep, her screen time was a little disappointing... but like the Blackbook article said, the few scenes she appears, she dares the camera to pan away. And I also agree with vulcannonibird that this is her best performance since "Girl, Interrupted." (Though, I wish we could see “Water Pills.” I’ve heard even better things said about that performance).

And yeah, I’ve been looking and anxiously waiting for that new film to be announced. I hope things haven’t fallen through.

There was a screening of Pippa Lee with most of the cast attending - but as far as I can see on APs picture site Winona wasn't there... Sad

Quote
Other than a saggy bit in the third act, the movie moves briskly along, actually becoming funnier and more engaging as it goes. Winona Ryder in particular, playing Pippa's friend and Sam's girlfriend, is better in the third act of this movie than she has been on screen in decades.

I agree, but decades... come on now? Huh?  Roll Eyes

Well, you have to admit, she really hasn't done anything since "From Here to Eternity".

From Stephen Holden  The New York Times, 27 Nov 2009

"...Winona Ryder as Pippa’s histrionic best friend, Sandra, and Shirley Knight as her blowzy next-door neighbor Dot, are also memorable. "

From Robert Abele The Los Angeles Times,27 Nov 2009

"...the less said about Winona Ryder's whiny character the better..."
