There is also what might turn out to be a cameo comeback fromWinona Ryder.

On the basis of Winona's portrayal of a family friend who turns out to have an unexpected impact on Pippa's life, she may just be heading for a second chance at A-list stardom

Screen Media snaps up US rights to The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee
6 July, 2009 | By Jeremy Kay

Screen Media Films is believed to have paid roughly $1m for US rights to Rebecca Miller’s ensemble drama The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee.

The distributor plans a theatrical release in October after it negotiated the deal with the film’s US representatives CAA.

The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee screened recently at the Edinburgh International Film Festival following its world premiere in Berlin last February and is scheduled to open in the UK through Icon on July 10.

Robin Wright Penn leads the cast as a woman who reflects on her former life after she moves into a retirement community with her ailing older husband.

The cast includes Keanu Reeves, Alan Arkin, Maria Bello, Winona Ryder, Julianne Moore, Monica Bellucci and Blake Lively. Stuart Ford’s IM Global handled international sales.

Screen Media will next release Death In Love starring Josh Lucas and Jaqueline Bisset on July 17. Previous titles include Loverboy, Adrift In Manhattan and Bickford Schemeckler’s Cool Ideas.

Screen Media gets Penn in 'Pippa'
Rebecca Miller film premiered at Berlin fest
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Screen Media Films has acquired distribution rights to the Robin Wright Penn starrer "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee," and will release the film theatrically in late October.

Pic, directed by Rebecca Miller, had its world premiere at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival. Acquisition was made by Screen Media Films president Robert Baruc and CAA, which packaged the film and arranged financing.

Penn stars as the devoted wife of an accomplished publisher, played by Alan Arkin, whose resolve crumbles when her husband forces a move to a staid Connecticut retirement community. Maria Bello, Monica Bellucci, Blake Lively, Julianne Moore, Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder are part of the ensemble cast.

Miller adapted the script from her own novel. Dede Gardner and Lemore Syvan produced the film. Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, Jean-Luc De Fanti and Jeff Sagansky are executive producers.

Reeves has all the vigour and charisma of a stoned turtle but Alan Arkin, as older husband Herb, is great fun, as is Winona Ryder, playing the monstrously pathetic Sandra - although her performance seems ripped from a far funnier movie that you find yourself wishing you were watching.

Reeves delivers one of his better performances, albeit in a role that steers carefully short of his limitations, while comeback queen Winona Ryder is nothing short of brilliant as Pippa’s neurotic and unstable friend

Someone on IMDB has posted that the film comes out limited Friday, October 23rd. So, that means only LA and NY, for now.

Pippa Lee and helps her character feel less superficial than she seems to be. Aiding Penn along the way is Alan Arkin in fine form. Mario Bello commands every single scene she is in, which is a real shame, as she isn’t in the film long, though her presence is felt through-out. That said; Bello is slightly upstaged by Winona Ryder who gives a great performance which adds much needed humour to the piece.

Winona Ryder gets much of the best humour in the film, and makes the most of it.
