EXCLUSIVE: Winona Ryder has just committed to star with Michael Shannon and Chris Evans in The Iceman, the Ariel Vromen-directed drama based on the Anthony Bruno book about Richard Kuklinski, a family man who secretly carried out contract killings for the mob. Millennium Films/Nu Image is financing. Shannon is playing Kuklinski, aka The Iceman, and Evans is playing his mentor, Robert Pronge. Ryder, most recently seen in Black Swan and The Dilemma, will play Kuklinski’s wife, Deborah, who did not know that he was a contract killer. Gersh-repped Ryder just wrapped the indie The Stare opposite James Franco. Another very recognizable actor has joined the cast of the Ariel Vromen-directed film The Iceman. Set to join Chris Evans and Michael Shannon in the drama, which is based on a true story is Winona Ryder.
The Iceman is based on Anthony Bruno’s book The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer and follows the story of mafia hitman Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski. The film’s cast includes Michael Shannon, Ray Liotta and David Schwimmer. Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) will play Kuklinski, while Chris Evans is also set to star, taking on the part of Robert Pronge (Kuklinski’s mentor assassin), which was originally set to be played by James Franco.
Deadline posted earlier today that Winona Ryder has joined the cast. She will be playing Kuklinski’s wife Deborah, and from the sound of it, her character has no idea her husband kills people for money. According to IndieWire, Ryder is replacing Maggie Gyllenhaal in the part.
Ryder’s likely to be more well known for her work in the ’80’s and ’90’s, including lead roles in Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Mermaids, but she’s appeared in a fairly steady stream of work in recent years. Among her recent credits were Black Swan and The Dilemma. Before that, she played a part in Star Trek. Screen test with Michael Shannon.

I've read the book 'Iceman: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer', and based on the information there, this should be a great supporting role for her. Really happy about this casting. This could be her best work in awhile.

The story seems interesting and Shannon is a really good actor. It will be grand to see him and Winona together...
