Wheeee!

« on: June 14, 2011, 05:00:26 PM »

We moved from Chicago to Utica, N.Y. right about the time Bobby Seale was bound and gagged in Judge Hoffman's court. My parents were Daley democrats and they understood gravesite voter registrations and
the Joe Kennedy Wagon Train. Utica was was much the same only smaller. Known as "Sin City" it was a big mob
town until the raid in Apalachin.
There was this guy, Rufus Elefante, and he ran the Democratic Party in Utica  from the 1920's  until the 1980's.
When FDR was running for governor of N.Y., Rufus promised him 10,000 people during a whistle stop.

Rufus delivered.

Rufus was a favorite son from then on.

When I was 12 I shared a paper route  with the son of a local politician. Every Sunday we delivered
our papers and then went to Uncle Henry's Pancake House with the father as he met with Rufus
to discuss the same and same. My friend and I sat at the counter, his father at a table. We were kids and we would laugh and dream because we had heard that if we asked for strawberries and cream that we would be shown to a room above the restaurant. For strawberries and cream.

My 5 Favorite Mob Movies

1. The Pope of Greenwich Village
2. On The Waterfront
3. Once Upon a Time in America
4. Reservoir Dogs
5. A Bronx Tale

I want to mention, "Sleepers", as well.

The Godfather (1972)
Goodfellas (1990)
White Heat (1949)
The Usual Suspects (1995)
The Public Enemy (1931)

and bonus: Bullets Over Broadway (1994)

Say, pass the strawberries and cream.

Ya ever notice in old movies how they always seem to say "say" before they say their big important sentence?

That is a great scene.

Here's one that is not quite as pretty.
And the "glove" is not quite as white.
