Tim Burton Taps Familiar Foursome for 'Frankenweenie'
By Jeff Sneider
Published: September 20, 2010 @ 3:34 pm
Print this page EmailShare0Share9 Director Tim Burton is re-teaming with some familiar faces for his stop-motion animated Disney feature "Frankenweenie."

Winona Ryder, Martin Landau, Catherine O'Hara and Martin Short will comprise the top-notch voice cast, the studio has confirmed to TheWrap.

John August wrote the script for the project, which is based on Burton's 1984 live-action short film about a man who reanimates his dog after it gets hit by a car.

Ryder previously starred in Burton's "Edward Scissorhands" and "Beetlejuice," the latter of which also featured O'Hara, who voiced the sultry Sally in "The Nightmare Before Christmas."

Short previously worked with the filmmaker on "Mars Attacks," while Landau won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Bela Lugosi in Burton's "Ed Wood."

O'Hara and Short will voice five characters each, while the lead role of Victor is yet to be cast.

Ryder has been earning strong notices for her brief but vital turn in Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan." She next stars as Kevin James' cheating wife in Ron Howard's "The Dilemma."

Frankenweenie Voice Actors Revealed

Now who’d have thunk it: Tim Burton is calling upon some of his old favourites to provide voices for his stop-motion movie Frankenweenie. Better the actors you know than the actors you don’t?

But here’s the twist – I’m not talking about Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. You have to dig just a little bit deeper into the Burton filmography this time. Mars Attacks deep, not Luau deep.

According to Deadline, Winona Ryder and Martin Landau have each taken a key role, while Martin Short and Catherine O’Hara will each be providing five different supporting voices.

Landau’s role is that of Mr. Rzykruski; Short will be playing Bob, Nassor, Toshiaki, Victor’s Dad and Mr. Bergermeister; O’Hara is down for Edgar, Weird Girl, Victor’s Mom, and Gym Teacher; Ryder’s been given the part of Elsa, a love interest for Victor.

Note that casting for that lead role of Victor has not yet been announced. Anybody else suddenly put in mind of that Wino Forever tattoo? Hmmm. Maybe Depp won’t have any kind of part in the film at all?

Bob, Nassor, Toshiaki, Edgar and Weird Girl are, I believe, children in the film. Some of them have pets who die. Not to give too much away, but this feature length version is rather more… expansive than the short. John August has had a lot of work to do in opening up a very simple short story for the feature film’s screenplay.

We had a nice picture of some of the Frankenweenie puppets before. I think you’ll agree that the designs are good.

Not that it has any significance, but I just realized that this will be Winona's first animated feature (I guess you can count "Scanner" though) and her first time working for Disney. I hope this leads to more collaborations for Tim and Winona! happy yes

Cool news.... Cheers

I think Disney was involved with Boys - as Touchstone co-produced it and Buena Vista distributed it....

IMDB also lists "3D remake to 2D movie" with this....

Hopefully they'll also do a 2D version as due to astigmatism all digital 3D systems don't work for me - suprisingly analogue IMAX 3-D works for me but more and more are "up"graded to digital. Well for me its a serious downgrade.... Sad

Sounds exciting!!  Shocked

To bad Johnny Depp is not apart of the cast (which is weird).

Disney Moves Frankenweenie Feature to October, 2012

And the release date shuffle keeps on keeping on as Tim Burton's Frankenweenie in 3D, an expansion of his original 1984 short, has been shifted from the originally announced March 9, 2012, to the more appropriate October 5th, 2012. After all, everything horror-related must come out in October, right?

Per Deadline New York Walt Disney Studios announced the move today for the film, in which a re-animated pooch returns to his master and all kinds of hijinks ensue. Frankenweenie stars Winona Ryder as the voice of Elsa and Martin Landau as the voice of Mr. Rzykruski. In addition, Martin Short and Catherine O'Hara take on the voices of multiple characters: For Short it's Bob, Nassor, Toshiaki, Victor's Dad, and Mr. Bergermeister while O'Hara tackles Edgar, Weird Girl, Victor's Mom, and Gym Teacher.

Along with pushing back Frankenweenie, the studio is moving up John Carter of Mars (based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' fantasy series and also in 3D of course) to the March 9th date vacated by Frankenweenie, where it'll go head-to-head against Ridley Scott's Prometheus. Should be an interesting weekend!
