Ryder is devious and witchy, her eyes flashing, her crinkly voice developing knife edges. She gives an acidly brilliant performance as a desperate, lying woman.

There are many positive reviews on Winona.  Cheers

But the film seems to be a flop   Sad

Looks like it.....Black Swan is a stunner with 95 M$ worldwide.

I hope The Dilemma with worldwide revenues + PayTV + Rental + DVD will at last not loose money....

Yes I know it is a success. In Italy there is a lot waiting for "Black Swan", but the movie "The Dilemma" does not talk about anyone.
The few reviews that exist are negative. It speaks well only the interpretation of Winona. But if the film goes wrong is bad for her.

*Possible spoiler alert*

That's too bad. I just watched the movie earlier this week and found it pretty entertaining. I guess because it's been in 2nd and 3rd place at the box office here in the U.S. I assumed it was doing well, but in the end it's the money that counts. Sad

Anyway, I do agree that her character was pretty bitchy and cunning. The one scene with Vince Vaughn where she tells him she'll deny everything if he goes to her husband with the truth, and she actually acts out exactly what she'll do...it gave me the chills! Like wow, how cold! Shocked  Even her look in this movie is kind of harsh. I was thinking, where is our sweet, pretty Winona? sad no  But, the whole point of acting is to transform yourself into someone new for each character, so two thumbs up for her! rock

Saw the movie yesterday - doing a double feature with Black Swan - had found it quite okay. All actors doing okay for me and Winona giving her role more depth than originally intended which is a good thing. So far having only seen the german dubbed version - her german voice finely matched this time - which maybe accounts for the good audience reaction: There're a few movies out there which IMO are better/funnier in the dubbed version like Red Heat and Caddyshack. The movie might have been better if it would've been more crisply edited to about 90 minutes. I'll give it a 6.5/10 - not really a memorable movie, but glad Winona landed a lead in a major movie.

Will try to catch the english original next while staying in Berlin....

but it's Ryder whose professional corpse is exhumed by The Dilemma. Her infidelity to James provides the film's central tension point, and where she could have settled for portraying a rapscallion %#@&, she manages instead to make her character's motivations for straying seem almost justifiable. She singlehandedly elevates The Dilemma from run-of-the-mill Vaughn/James vehicle to something uniquely vital, much as Aniston did in The Break-Up.
