Winona Ryder has been cast as one of the leads in Ron Howards' "Cheaters", according to Deadline Hollywood Daily.

Ryder, last seen shooting baby Spock out of her humanly canal, will play Kevin James' wife in the flick.

The film tells of a man (Vince Vaughan) who spots his best friend's (James) wife (Ryder) with another man, and must decide whether or not to tell his pal.

Winona Ryder has joined the cast of Ron Howard's infidelity comedy "Cheaters."

Previously reported under the title "Your Cheating Heart," but referred to by Deadline Hollywood as "Cheaters" (though it's hard to tell if its just their shorthand in getting the story up or a legitimate title change) the film centers on a man who finds out his best friend's wife is cheating, only to struggle with what to do with the knowledge. Vince Vaughn is set to play the man struggling the knowledge, while Ryder will play the cheating wife married to Kevin James. The film is based off an idea by Brian Grazer, produced by Vaughn and Imagine Entertainment and has been adapted into a script by Allan Loeb ("Wall Street 2," "The Baster").

While it was previously reported that this wouldn't go in front of cameras until next year, with more casting underway perhaps it will get in front of cameras sooner? Certainly the schedules for all three actors and the director is pretty wide open, so what are they waiting for?

This would be good - but we had some movies sounding great that got no distribution (Darwin Awards, Stay Cool) - but hope dies last... Wink

According to empireonline filming will begin "soon" in Chicago - do we have anyone out there?

Found a review of the script. I don't know yet what I think about Winona's costars, here... Huh?

Quote

I've read an October 2009 draft of Allan Loeb's Untitled Cheating Project (a.k.a., Your Cheating Heart), which will costar Vince Vaughn and Kevin James under director Ron Howard. The Universal-funded Imagine project, reportedly based on an idea by producer Brian Grazer, will shoot in Chicago later this year or next. I'm mentioning this because I didn't much care for Loeb's script -- in fact I almost hated it -- and I'm figuring if I say something now it might influence the development. Or not. I don't care either way.

I'm not going to give the story away -- just the basic set-up. Vaughn and James will play Chicago-based engine designers Ronnie Valentine and Isaac Backman, respectively, whose significant others are Beth (Ronnie's live-in girlfriend) and Geneva (Isaac's wife). The central tension is about Ronnie accidentally discovering that Geneva is playing around on Isaac, and the anxieties and trepidations that stem from his not knowing what to do. Should he just blurt out the bad news to Isaac, his business partner and longtime best friend? And if he does, will Isaac somehow blame him for Geneva's betrayal? (Guilt by association.) Should he mind his own business and stay out of the lives of others?

I was immediately repelled by Ronnie's response because -- hello? -- there's only one thing to do. In such a situation his loyalty would be to his longtime friend, not the wife, and so one way or the other he'd have to share what he suspects. No guy would have to think about this. He'd start out by stressing to his pal that he doesn't really "know" anything but that he's seen something disturbing and that maybe something's up, etc. And then he'd suggest that the friend might want to hire a shamus to learn the facts or whatever. But come what may you must share what you've seen and/or suspect.

The fact that jabbering Ronnie -- a guy who's in denial about almost everything, and who fibs all the time like Alibi Ike and has trust issues with everyone -- hems and haws throughout the story is infuriating. By my sights the guy has no convictions or cojones, and who wants to spend 110 minutes with a 13 year-old who mostly goes "homina-homina-homina" when faced with a serious issue?

When I heard about this film I thought -- hoped -- that it might be a darkly comedic riff on Harold Pinter's Betrayal -- i.e., about a guy having a longterm secret love affair with his best friend's (or closet business associate's) wife or live-in girlfriend. Maybe a little Betrayal stew with some Damage seasoning, minus the father-son dynamic. A story about how a heavy attraction for the wrong woman can sometimes get into your blood like a virus, and how sometimes there's no shaking it off. But not a tragedy -- a telling of this odd tale in a jazzy-clumsy comedic way.

For me, a story about a serious emotional deception that goes on for several weeks or months or whatever would be fascinating. A comedy about how betrayal can happen between people who've grown up together and genuinely care for each other but at the same time are starting to faintly dislike each other, and how friends and lovers who are growing apart often seem to cut their ties in a passive aggressive way (i.e., by indirectly persuading the other person to reject them).

All to say that that Loeb's October 2009 draft is a real drag because it's about a guy-guy (i.e, similar to the characters Vaughn played in The Breakup and The Wedding Crashers) who doesn't know the first thing about being a solid, stand-up friend when the situation demands this. I was thinking as I read it that I don't know anyone like this (i.e., an antsy little child), but maybe beer-head and onion-ring guys who watch the Super Bowl are like this when they find out that their best friend's wife is doing the out-of-bounds nasty.

Well they never made Meat Loaf - to put a reference from a well-known producer from another Winona movie - but their movies were always one of the summer comdies. At least Winona could have a wide-released movie again - even if surely no awards will return from this.

I was afraid in a moment maybe it is a joke again from Chris. But it seems it's really happening and I think A Ron Howard film will be good to Winona. At least it will be worldwide again, right? That's great news!!

Looks to be true...Ron Howard rarely misses completely, but Vince Vaughan's star has been fading ("Couples Retreat", etc.)...I will keep an open mind...

Normally I'd say: YES. But with the way how Winona's last supposed "comeback" movies turned out I'll take nothing for granted until I see it with my own eyes. As the german saying goes: I've seen horses puking in front of a drugstore...

Very interesting. And here is a Turkish idiom (but it loses its meaning a bit in translation): unless you see the creek, don't tuck up your trousers..

Career rebound for Winona? Actress lands key role in Ron Howard-directed, Vince Vaughn-starring comedy
by Nicole Sperling
Categories: Industry News, Movie Biz, News

Image Credit: David Gabber/PR PhotosLooks like Winona Ryder is launching her own comeback story. The ’80s icon has landed a leading role in the Ron Howard-directed film, previously called Cheaters, starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James. Sources tell EW.com that Ryder beat out a slew of other actresses in her drive to land the part of Geneva, Kevin James’ wife. She auditioned twice for the part, outshining the likes of Kate Beckinsale, Carla Gugino and Uma Thurman, who flew herself in for the audition.

Why is the role so coveted? Well it turns out the film is no tried-and-true fat guy/hot wife comedy. Rather, the movie, from screenwriter Allan Loeb (21), centers on two best friends, played by James and Vaughn. When Vaughn’s character discovers that James’ wife (Ryder) has cheated on his best friend, he confronts her directly and must decide whether or not he will tell his friend. (Thus, the film often pits Ryder’s character opposite Vaughn’s.) The movie is set to begin filming in Chicago in May.

Ryder, who recently wrapped Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan starring Natalie Portman, can next be seen in the CBS mini-series When Love is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story, a period piece that depicts the story of the woman who co-founded Al-Anon. She stars opposite Berry Pepper. It premieres April 25.

"Go Winona!"

Yeah,I like what she is doing.  She is proving herself to be both proffessional and talented. Good things are coming.
Thanks for the information, Chris.

Tangled Web

Entertainment Weekly Nicole Sperling is reporting that Winona Ryder's having landed the part of Kevin James' cheating spouse in Ron Howard's Cheaters (a.k.a., Your Cheating Heart/Untitled Cheating Project) indicates a career rebound.

My three reactions: (1) Ryder's part is arguably the least fleshed-out of the four leads, or at least it was in the October '09 draft of Alan Leob's script that I reviewed on 2.23; (2) the movie is essentially about the inability of James' longtime friend and business partner (played by Vince Vaughn) to man up and tell James that his wife might be up to something on the side -- he actually hems and haws about whether to share this vitally important suspicion with a guy he cares about; and (3) there are no cheaters plural in Cheaters but a single infidel (Ryder's Geneva character), unless you want to say that Vaughn is figuratively "cheating" on James.

The implication of Cheaters, however, suggests a nifty premise -- a movie about two guys and their significant others who are all cheating on each other at the same time. Now that's a funny set-up. That I would pay to see.

Cheaters will begin shooting in Chicago in May, Sperling reports.

Well, I just hope her role gets "fleshed-out" come time to start filming! Roll Eyes

Hey Chris,

 I think she'll  "flesh-out" just fine.

" According to empireonline filming will begin 'soon' in Chicago - do we have anyone out there? "

May 3rd I will be leaving New Orleans and driving to New York with stops in Memphis, Chicago and Kalamazoo Michigan. I will be arriving in Chicago on the 6th and leaving on the 9th. Chicago is my home town and I know it really well. I have friends and family there so I'm not going to devote time towards tracking her down. But if you guys happen to come up with dates and locations, who knows. I'm not going to stand in line and shove a camera in her face but if can get a decent shot that dosn't seem intrusive,I'd be happy to oblige.

Winona... comeback... again
Well f-ck me gently with a chainsaw...

Winona Ryder’s comebacks have started and sputtered several times. This time however, this time seems like the most legitimate and perhaps the last shot. EW.com is reporting that Winona has won a major role in the new Ron Howard feature starring Vince Vaughn. Apparently Winona had to audition twice and in doing so beat out Uma Thurman, who wanted the part so badly she paid her own expenses to get to the meetings, and also Kate Beckinsale. Oh Kate Beckinsale, it’s really time to stop saying no to Underworld 10.

The movie is called Cheaters. Vince Vaughn and Kevin James are best friends. Winona is married to James. Winona is unfaithful. Vince finds out. It’s Vince vs Winona vs the Truth. Which means the comedy will centre around the relationship between Vince and our Noni. Sounds promising.

@eagle-rare:

I can only assume the shoot dates will show up soon. For "Black Swan" they were constantly being posted daily. There are a number of websites that post where films are shooting... I'll try to find some of them for you! Grin
