WHERE'S WINONA RYDER'S SECOND CHANCE

THE HOLLYWOOD DOUBLE STANDARD
Just finished watching Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”, With Gary Oldman,  Winona Ryder & Keanu Reeves. I have seen this film before and am always completely entertained; by Ms. Ryder’s performance.

She seems to thoroughly immerse herself in the role...and it shows in the tender love scenes between her and Oldman. Maybe it came from an off scene attraction but what ever happened what comes through on screen is what real movies are made of.

She also made her presence felt in “Aliens Resurrection” along side Sigourney Weaver. So as I watched I also wondered..why haven’t I seen Ms. Ryder in any of the newer films being released.

There are several I can think of; that her caliber of performance; would have enhanced greatly.  It also seems to me that even though some may have considered her, issues oriented recent past as a negative; it could not have been more of a negative than that of Robert Downy Jr's back to back, bouts with drugs.

It appears that if you are a male-celebrity...either in sports of the movie realm you can count on second chances. Not the same however for women. What’s with the double standard?

There are several; male actors who have blown film-budgets; by causing cost over runs due to, cocaine, or alcohol use, and they have visibly been given chances at redemption. In some cases more than once, again I point to Robert Downy Jr., who doesn’t strike as a more entertaining or representative of the active profession than Ms. Ryder.,

I honestly believe that in some instances it is up to us the fans to demand the return of stars we find who deliver the magic on screen, that we all pay to see.

Unfortunately, Winona is still seen as the punchline to a bad joke by too many people. But she has a career, she's working - there are things coming out on a pretty regular basis. I would try to be happy about it. She may never return to her former status, but I'll still be interested in seeing her in movies. I'm hoping she can develop in the direction of an interesting character actress. I'm not sure if she even wants to be carrying an entire movie these days, but I don't know.

About Downy Jr. - I guess I disagree with the writer, but I've always found him very entertaining and charismatic. The guy has a ton of talent. Just go back and watch Chaplin sometime. He has a certain energy that can carry a movie.

I have not - and will not - see "Twilight" or the sequel, but I admit to a small thing for Kristen Stewart...see this other thread:

And as to the main topic, WR's comeback has been slow and admittedly painful to watch at times, but there has been some good work here and there..."The Last Word" was a good role for her...
And she still looks great !!

After having a WR double.feature yesterday - Crucible and Deeds - something like a "frustration ice-bowl" for a long-time fan I think many poeple would watch her movies if theyhad the chance to. Most of her late movies was only shown in a handful of cinemas.

On the other hand many movies - not only Winona's - especially the smaller ones have problems till the advent of multiplexes. An examüle from were I life:

In the past more movies simply got a chance. Today anything that isn't entitled "blockbuster" has nearly no chance of hitting the big screens. And from the 6 small arty cinemas in and around Hamburg there only 2 left today - both facing closure as they're located in very hip and expensive areas....
