The Black Butterfly (the original, unfinished lacking thread ) Mick knew she would be at The After Hours book store. The one with the bluish window panes, and that napping dog to step over just inside the splintered door. She had her nose buried in a book over by the over-sized Graphic Art shelves where shadows seemed for some appropriate reason to be all right angles. Those were the books she brought into Russian Literature lectures back when all of her other class mates just slept instead. All except one other - shy silent sketcher Mick, seemingly transfixed on The Black Butterfly so much he once left behind a black and white sketch of her with curved seams splitting at strategic pressure points and fraggled threads as ripcords, foretelling the possibility she would feel the need to quickly peel away her cocoon. She always sensed he was drawing her. She helped by posing - hair down over one glancing eye, legs crossed with a slight bob up and down up and down. Everything short of winking and blowing a $%#@ing kiss.
Now - in the dark...her soft light hair seemed luminous, most of it tucked in a red knit cap. She wore a heavy pull over navy sweater and black jeans sitting on the bare wood floor. No seams appeared to be giving away. M Darky hesitated at the shelf opposite, then turned and handed her the slip of paper he held in both shaking hands. Unfolding it and quickly reading and re-reading, she blushed, slipped the note into the book she had opened, and looked up into his eyes momentarily. Her eyes shone like half-moon diamonds.
"Leave me," she whispered into her book, "browse the store five minutes. Take stairs to cellar."
"But..."
The Black Butterfly yelled a whisper: "Go!"

Some time later, at the end of the Modern Philosophy aisle next tothe basement's midnight-blue exit door, the curious butterfly found Mick asleep, lying on the floor with a black book opened against his lap. The smallish title was facing her as she smiled at him, almost laughing. Quietly, she peered down closer to unveil the wordy mystery, it read The Most Curious and Strangest Secrets in Attraction in bold Romantica red-lettering. The Black Butterfly scowled another smile at him, as she slipped a responsive small note in his front shirt pocket. Being very observant, she admired his sleepishness with a caring memento-like stare then lightly stepped away towards the outer door. Once outside she couldn't wait any longer to fire up one of her crazy-smokey Red Marbies she had always craved and could never put down. As she started walking towards her way home, she made one last look back at that same door she had just left, then slowly turned away with those concerning eyes of sympathy and irony. Not this time... She convinced herself, yet again, with her usual brand of private caution.
Darky heard the door shut with a slight thud, enough to startle his other dreamy welcoming life. As he rubbed his searing eyes and sat up, he started to feel dazzy for fallen asleep. He then slowly swagged up and walked to the door coursing yet another assumed stand-up by WiNoni with a certain knowing: her perfume left its everlasting scentual existence behind for him. Now, peering out in the snappy cold, he quickly seen his trendy truth, as she was nearly a block up Waltz Street (Hey, I couldn't resist) So anyway...he decided to pace the chase after her, which was not the actual wind-chilled plan ( Bbbrrr!!, and cold it so was!). ...Suddenly, after gaining some distance, he stopped, shivering everly without his After Hours abandoned jacket. With squinty-glazed eyes, he seen she had surprisingly turned, standing there glazing back at him with a look of both timed disappoinment and a smile that couldn't hide itself even if it tried. Kindly, she chose to wait for him and his forward impatience to close-in as she tensed with her own uncertain shivers, smiling more now than she could have ever realized.
"Did someone steal your coat or something, you must truly be freezing?" WiNoni yelled ahead.
"I'm not sure ...with my luck, if I went back, it would probably be gone for sure." Mick chattered, getting closer, hugging himself for dear life.

As predicted, the unprecedented California snow began coming down with intensity all around the strangely acquainted couple as they continued their uneasy encounter. Mick looked up and around, still shaking. "I need to find a warm pit stop somewhere nearby, like a--"
"Laundromat?" Noni interrupted . "Eh, yes ...like a laundromat ...very good." "There's actually one not to far down on the right at the next street, maybe a block."
They both exchanged awkward expressions obviously from having personal thoughts of knowing where to go next, he in location, her in the conversation, or all the same.
"I tell you what, I'll give you my sweater to wear, I already have a coat and long sleeve shirt on underneath, would that help you?" Noni offered, as she started taking off her coat.
"Oh... no, I couldn't have you taking off your clothes here in public now ...oh man."
Mick thought this was a little crazy, but she had a thoughtful point. I mean, he was freezing and she did have more heat, that was true.
She was now sliding off that dark sweater.
"Oh, come on now its not that big a deal , I don't mind, really I don't, you need to be warm until we get to the mat now don't you?"
She then handed him her big navish sweater along with that known Everlasting aroma, all over it.
After Micky put on Noni's sweet smelling sweater, she began giggling: The thready garment was way too big for him as well; sleeves were past hands.
"What? ...Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle ...funny, fun ...what the heck are you doing with a humongous sweater like this anyhow?
"It keeps me warm dummy." ...her laughter became a shining smile.
"Hmm..." Micky flung his arms back and forth like a penguin. "Wack! Wack! ...that means thank you in penguin-ish."
More giggles from Noni, just what he wanted. Their eyes locked, momentarily, with sensual certainty . "Your welcome ...I hope your warmer now." She nearly whispered.
"Sure..." He nearly rose his right hand to her chin and she seen that possibility as they finally came to Horizon Street and turned to the right, toward's Waits' Laundromat.
As Mick tugged on his new warmth he felt something rustle in his shirt pocket underneath. He reached up and into the now damp sweater to find a piece of paper, his eyes found few words. WiNoni quickly noticed his discovery with bittersweet alarm, her eyes widening, rolling. He stopped, as did she; the snow had its fade as well...
As the snowflakes were disappearing in the frosty air, Mick glided his eyes over at WiNoni with perplexed wandering as he spoke with a low voice. "I finally found your message in my shirt pocket just now." He slightly held it up to show her, half smiling.
"Oh really." Already knowing, she thought of switching to auto-pilot with this uncomfortable circumstance and lit another cig to calm the uncalm.
"You were hoping I would find it later, I'm guessing?" Mick had to ask.
"Yes," whispered a smiling WiNoni, her eyes seemed surprised.
"I'm glad you liked my poem. I wanted to find a different way to show my friendly intentions to you so you could understand me." Mick explained.
"Oh, thats okay. It was very nice actually. I do understand, its just that I have this natural way of guarding myself from anyone I don't know, and have for some time now."
"Yes, I'm fully aware of that. And thats why I had to write that for you."
Mick felt he had to clarify that.
"I'm curious, how did you even catch me in time back there?" She wanted to change the subject.
Mick easily predicted that direction. "It was your scent, um, I mean your perfume that lead me out that door, so then I seen you up ahead."
"Wow, thats perceptive of you, I actually didn't think of that at all. You mean you still smelled my perfume after I was gone, say, five minutes later?"
"Yep, yep."
They both just kept smiling at each other just as the white snow began falling again with much more uncertain purpose...
A still-sketchy Mick leaned in towards WiNoni with an uninvited sniff to find any remaining vestige of her sweet-smelling scent just for his enjoyment. He found it -- just a few inches from her pale sensuous neck.
Her bewitching smile came out to play with his own grinning wonder. "Did you find what you were smelling for or do you have to try again?"
She obviously teased him with sneering wordplay but he accepted that with the same fervor.
"Um, well, I'm not exactly positive, so I'm afraid I'll have to try again." Mick responded with a mischievous smirk.
Closer
"How can you even try if your so afraid?" She fought a smile earnestly, but it won easily.
"Well, I'm not that afraid."
"How can you tell for sure?"
She shuddered slightly, trapping her eyes shut, as Mick closed in for another close encounter of a second kind...
After another sniffy interlude, Mick rose his head slowly pulling away from her own until, again finally, their eyes and smiles had found their own use of gravity.
Instinctively, Mick couldn't resist himself no longer as he put both of his hands on WiNoni's wet jacketed shoulders, drawing her into their combined warmth for a closeness they could, now, seemingly not stop. She, however, did not resist his forwardness in return.
Smiles then became words...
"I thought this would be better for a moment before we find that laundromat. I mean, you know, the whole two-bodies-are-better-for-warmth thing," said Mick.
"Really...well, I thought you were trying to actually take advantage of me, but thats good to know, also." She played along as usual, smiling, of course.
"Hmm, is that so? Well I'll have you know that is what I have planned to do next...ever so carefully."
He held his hands on her soft cheeks and moved in on her red lips with his and they kissed with every discovery they could ever find in each other in that most chanceable of warming moments...
As he stopped kissing her, Mick stepped back from WiNoni and tried to look away from her presence. Looking around he appeared to be alarmed by something. But he managed to hold a worthy smile as best he could as he then was pulled back into her eyes....
"Umm, are you ok, Mick?" WiNoni asked with startling wide-eyed concern.
"Yes, I just-- I was having some crazy thoughts." He turned around not facing her.
"Like what thoughts?" She smiled and came around to face him again. "Come on now, penny for your thoughts." She reached into her jean pocket and pulled out a penny.
"Oh, your funny. Keep the penny. It's ridiculous actually, I mean my thoughts."
"Okay. I just need to know one thing. Am I included in your thoughts?"
Mick didn't know how to answer her direct qeustion.
Mick had just remembered that Greek-Roman story of Cupid he had always found fascinating, but realized later he couldn't make any real sense of why he thought of it now, entirely...
--}--> --}--> --}-->
...Cupid fell deeply in love with her, and took her as his wife, but as a mortal Psyche was forbidden to ever look directly at Cupid.
Psyche was happy until her sisters persuaded her to look at Cupid, Cupid punished her by leaving her. Psyche instantly found herself alone in an open field without Cupid or even any other humans in sight. As she wandered trying to find her love, she came upon the temple of Venus. Wishing to still destroy her, the goddess gave Psyche a series of tasks, each harder and more dangerous then the last.
For her last task Psyche was given a little box and told to take it to the underworld. She was to get some of the beauty of Perserphine, the wife of Pluto, and put it in the box. She was warned not to open the box, but Temptation overcame her and she opened the box. Instead of finding beauty, she found a deadly slumber.
When Cupid came upon her lifeless body on the ground, he gathered the deadly sleep from her and put it back in the box. Cupid forgave her, as did Venus, and the Gods, moved by Psyche's love for Cupid, made her a Goddess...

As he came back to his senses, Mick slightly looked away after gazing at WiNoni's bewildered charm once more and noticed that he was staring at the most welcoming of places -- Waits' Laundromat!...yep.
This surprised him with a most odd coincidence. Finally, they were there. Be it here or anywhere. And he was very happy at any rate because the air was getting colder with snowstill falling lightly. WiNoni smiled back at him passionately, then passively, awaiting his answer to her qeustion. However she knew inside that she still had mixed feelings about this whole crazy experience, knowing good and well, that they were completely, or mostly, different from one another.
As if, perhaps, she knowing, herself, how that greek tale itself would play out in their reality -- it being, most likely, bittersweet.
But again, despite both believing perhaps that fantasy is only a momentary tease of the gods, if believable, that it could in fact be something way more complex and complicated, like say, extra-normal friendships seem to be sometimes.
They slowly gravitated around each other until she spoke.
"Well, when you find that answer, I would like to know."
WiNoni lowered her chin as she smiled, something she's proned to do Mick noticed as he glared into her eyes with a daring confident look.
"Well...um, I can tell you that I was thinking about that Cupid and Psyche story and I'm not sure exactly why. I suppose I should tell you that at least."
But somewhere deep inside himself he knew it was about her in some way, perhaps himself as well.
"Hmm, really, now what does that have to do with me, huh?"
"I never said it was about you, now did I ?" Mick smiled and opened the door for her to the twenty-four hour laundry refuge.
Warmth...
As Winoni walked passed Mick into the door she gave him a quivering smile that he would hold forever. But he would not go any further inside and stood by the door looking down or outside, barely looking at her. Not because it was about her but of his own doubts of his unsure intentions.
"Are you okay?" She came closer to him.
Mick dared not to look into her eyes, but did, it was pointless to look away. "Oh, I don't know for sure. I mean I'm glad your with me, itsjust I don't want to make you feel bad for doing that."
She didn't speak, she just smiled wide, chin down and...
...whispered a "Thank you" with softness and sincerity.
"Why are you thanking me for?" Mick was clearly distracted but manage to smile back at her naturally.
Winoni answered with a slight laugh. "Okay...for saying you're glad to be with me and caring about how I might feel about that, of course." She realized he was distracted also, so she asked him. "Are you sure there isn't something else thats on your mind?"
"Oh no, I was just going to add that I should be thanking you for finding this place and giving me your sweater to warm up...and, of course, that out there a moment ago."
All Winoni could do now is just laugh and blush, as did Mick; she was so contagious with her charms that he felt his soul start to stir inside. And with that, he trusted his actions with a new approach.
Feeling enraptured, Mick walked over to Winoni and lowered his eyes to her own.
His gentle touch made her shudder, but not without his own, as he rested his hands just above her waist momentarily. He then rose his arms under hers and gave her a returned warmth, he realized, she had finally wanted.
Their new and unique love found a most profound kiss, that to them, seem to last forever.
The laundromats' flourescent lights flickered, bickered and strobed; no one else was there, they were undeniably alone...together.
