That's a shame, but there was some tough competition.

I recently watched GI, I hadn't seen it in almost ten years and I had forgotten what a wonderful performance she gave. I think it would have been a better movie without Lisa(Jolie) barking all over the place. They should have given Lisa a lobotomy at the beginning and kept her around for comic relief. Quiet the movie down a bit and let the relationships between Susanna and the other characters devolop more.
There could be a tense moment regarding power and control between Susanna and Whoppi's character and in the background Lisa could walk nto a pole. Susanna and Murphy's character could share a revealing moment in the bathroom and at the end of the scene Lisa could get stuck in the toilet. Susanna and Redgrave's character could be going at it in the Dr's office,Susanna looks out the window and we see Lisa being hit by a lawnmower.
Better yet, take Lisa out of the movie all together.

One nomination for its music. It's not fair.

There's still hope for The Golden Globes and the SAG awards.

The Jolie fans regard GI as one of her best performances, so I'm sure they were glad she was in it. Winona has never really gotten the credit she deserved for putting it all together.

In GI Winona had the superior character to work with. Her transition from bad to worst to getting better - wonderfully done. You can watch the movie again and again and always find some small bits you haven't noticed before. Plus Manglod knew how to use Winona's abilty to gesture without saying a word, her wonderful eyes and of course her fine voice for the voice-overs. Angelina was good too in a Nicholson one-flew-over kind of way. But except for the end her character was quite fixed troughout the movie. As said a few years ago I read in several TV-mags that Mangold made a directors cut for Columbia that run 3+ hours. I so hope it gets out on DVD some day. Would even be reason for me to upgrade to HD....

yeh i agree.
The directors cut was probably just the deleted scenes included in the places they were removed from. I wondered the first time i watched it what happened to the flashbacks in the second half of the film, it was a great recurring theme which was lost due to the scenes being removed later in the film.

Just finished watching "When Love is Not Enough." A kind person has uploaded it to 'Stage vu' if anyone hasn't seen it yet.
