I haven't been following them that closely because I haven't seen any of the films this year.

Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire

Best Actress: Kate Winslet.....I'm not really surprised, she's a wonderful actress

Best Actor: Sean Penn, Milk.....This is a story about a San Francisco supervisor (city councilor), who was gay, who got shot by another supervisor. The case is infamous because the guy who shot him got off on the defense that he had eaten too much fast food. Sean Penn lives in the Bay Area.

Best supporting actress: Penelope Cruz....I've never really thought of her as a "good" actress, but I haven't seen this film. Wink

Best supporting actor: Heath Ledger....This is the only performance I've seen, and it was a good one. Pity he's not around to enjoy his win.

A.R. Rehman won 2 oscars. thats great.

but the music & song for which he won them were just 20-30% of what music & songs he does in Indian Cinema.
lol
too bad those films dont get him anything.

I somewhat wanted Mickey Rourke to win, but Sean Penn was great too! I too wanted 'Ben Button' to win and I also cannot stand Penlope Cruz. There is just something about her that makes me cringe. However, I really, really cannot stand Amy Adams! I just can't understand all the fuss surrounding her. I saw "Doubt" and loved it. Meryl, Phillip, Viola were fantastic, but Ms. Adams performance was nothing special- at all! So many other actors could've and should've filled that spot instead of her.

And even though I think Meryl Streep should've won for "Doubt," how great is it that Kate finally won!!! After 6 nominations- she deserved it! happy yes

  Just some meanderings....

Hugh was the first non-comedian to ever host I think. (some might say Chevy Chase Tongue ). Thought the opening number was ok, then Anne Hathaway love saved the day....Hated the way they did the Salute to the Departed. The camera was at a rough angle, and I fell out of my chair trying to see what was on the screen....Thought having the 5 winner tribute to the nominees was a brilliant idea for the most part even though it took longer. Cuba Gooding, Jr. was a disaster, but Sophia Loren looked...well preserved! Lovely moment for the Ledger family, Jerry Lewis, and yes....Kate W and her shampoo bottle and..."suck it up, Meryl!" laugh

edit: forgot to mention I liked the Steve Martin/Tina Fey bit. Grin

A. R. Rahman - Vellai Pookkal
http://www.youtube.com/v/knubvDUdurM

his most melodious

song meaning :
Quote
Singer: A R Rahman

veLLai PookaL ulagam engum malarhavae
(Let white flowers bloom all over the world)
vidiyum Bhoomi amaidhikaaga vidihavae
(Let the dawn be for peace in the world)
manmel manjal veluchcham vizhuhavae
(Let the yellow sunshine touch the soil)
malarae sombal muRiththu ezhuhavae
(Let the flowers wake up from their sleep)
kuzhanthai vizhikattumae
(Let the baby wake up...)
Thaayin katha kathappil ...
(in mothers warmth)
ulagam vidiyattumae
(Let the world wake up...)
piLLayin sirumugha siRippil (VeLLai) ...
(In the innocent smile of the baby)
kaatrin perisaiyum
(The wonderful music of the wind,)
mazhai paadum paadalgalum
(And the songs which rain sings -)
oru maunam poal inbam tarumooOO
(Can they give as much bliss as given by silence?)
koadi keertanamum kavi koartha vaarthaiygalum thuLi kaNNer poal arththam tharumo (VeLLai)
(Can the songs and words by a poet, give as much meaning as that of a drop of tear?)
yengu siru kuzhanthai than kaigal neetidumo
(Where the small baby stretches its hand….)
angu thondrayo koLLai nilavae
(O moon, please appear there)
enghu manidha Inam poar oyinthu sayinthidumo
(Where human race releaxes after a war is over,)
angu koovadho veLLai kuyilae (VeLLai)
(O white cuckoo, sing there…)

comparing this one song to his input in slumdog, i think there was absolutely no competition this year. :p
(slumdog mill... music is not even 10% of what this one is)
