Stay Cool. The Polish Brothers (Northfork) return with a "charming comedy" about a high school reunion of sorts, with Winona Ryder and Hilary Duff. Manure was sharply criticized at Sundance just a couple of months ago; could Stay Cool possibly be any good? Winona Ryder doesn't get seen enough, and Hilary Duff has made interesting choices, so this could be surprisingly good -- or another train wreck.

And with his role as "Big Girl" in the Michael and Mark Polish comedy "Stay Cool." The latter movie has a cast including Mark Polish, Hilary Duff, Winona Ryder, Josh Holloway, Jon Cryer and Chevy Chase — and it scares Sean, he admits.

Big Girl is "over the top — insane. I hope it works. He's a guy who is very gay. Gay doesn't really cut it. He's taken flamboyance as an identity and put it on massive steroids," says Sean. "He wears headbands, flowing robes, bracelets and rings, and lisps. I was absolutely terrified to do it. They talked about it being sort of subtle, but as soon as I got on the set, I realized, 'OK — go big, or go home.'" He adds, "I slipped into it easily, so easily, they were saying, 'This is you.' I know people like this."

Sean says the Polish Bros. ("The Astronaut Farmer," "Twin Falls, Idaho") are "making their deal right now" for "Stay Cool" distribution.

Program Notes:

Mild-mannered Henry McCarthy (Mark Polish), an accomplished author, returns home to give the commencement speech at his high school. But even after 20 years, it feels like he never left. Henry stays in his old room, perfectly preserved with '80s artifacts, and a luggage mishap leaves him no choice but to squeeze into clothes still hanging in his closet. Within hours of reuniting with his old pals (Sean Astin and Josh Holloway), they crack the yearbook and convince Henry to call his old crush, Scarlet (Winona Ryder), who has just broken up with her ex-jock boyfriend. Things for Henry are off to a decent start, but enter a sexy high school senior who wants to take him to prom (Hilary Duff), his nervous book agent (Jon Cryer), his parents (who seem as unchanged as the bedroom), and a wily principal (Chevy Chase), and it all gets complicated.

The Polish brothers (Twin Falls Idaho) are already a force in American independent filmmaking, and their latest collaboration is an intelligent and insightful romp that breathes new life into the romantic comedy. Superbly mixed with just the right amount of nostalgia and wit, the film transports us back to brighter days with vivid cinematography, a terrific soundtrack, and wonderful performances bursting with comedic flavor.

She has the Informers, Trek and Stay Cool all coming out within a few weeks, so I can understand that maybe there are some scheduling conflicts. However, it does seem a pity to miss a chance to promote Stay Cool.
