Mark and Michael Polish form indie company Prohibition Pictures
The filmmakers are working on two films in Santa Clarita, 'Manure' and 'Stay Cool.'
May 22, 2008

Independent filmmakers Mark and Michael Polish said today that they have formed their own production company, Prohibition Pictures, and will be making two films back to back at Melody Ranch Studios in Santa Clarita, starting Tuesday.

"Manure," a comedy about manure salesmen, will star Billy Bob Thornton, Téa Leoni and Kyle MacLachlan. "Stay Cool," another comedy, will star Winona Ryder, Sean Astin and Chevy Chase.

Both scripts were written by the Polish brothers and will be directed by Michael, with Mark taking acting roles in each. The two films also will feature some of the same behind-the-scenes staff, including cinematographer David Mullen, production designer Clark Hunter and costume designer Bic Owen.

The Polish brothers' previous films are "Twin Falls Idaho" (1999), "Jackpot" (2001) and "Northfork" (2003). They are natives of El Centro, Calif.

Polish brothers form Prohibition Pictures
Company has two movies in the works
By Borys Kit

May 21, 2008, 05:29 PM

Indie filmmakers Mark and Michael Polish have formed Prohibition Pictures, a production and finance entity and have set two new movies they will helm.

Joining the brothers in Prohibition are longtime associate Jonathan Sheldon, who worked with the duo on "Northfork" and "The Astronaut Farmer," as well as financier/producer Ken Johnson and his partner/producer Janet Du Bois. Johnson and Du Bois have made a private equity investment in the new shingle.

The company aims to make two to four indie movies a year, with a slate that will be put together in the coming month.

The two movies out of the gate are "Manure" and "Stay Cool," which will be shot back-to-back with nary a breath between them. "Manure" shoots May 27. The comedy, about a manure salesmen in heartland America set in the mid-1960s, stars Billy Bob Thornton, Tea Leoni, and Kyle MacLachlan. "Cool," described as a "knowing-your-age" comedy, stars Winona Ryder, Sean Astin and Chevy Chase, will shoot July 14.

Co-written by both Polish Brothers, Michael Polish will direct and the films will be produced by Mark Polish, Michael Polish, Ken Johnson, Jonathan Sheldon, and Janet DuBois, with Nick Byassee serving as associate producer.

Mark Polish will take a featured acting role in both.

The two movies will share many Polish Brothers regulars including cinematographer David Mullen, production designer Clark Hunter and costume designer Bic Owen.

The Polish Brothers are repped by ICM, Media Talent Group and Alex Kohner.

Perhaps its one of those "older people trying to act cool and stay young then realizing how stupid they look and they need to act their age" deals.

The other twist is that the Polish Brothers have gotten independent financing for both this movie and a second one, to begin shooting only two weeks after this one wraps. That one is called “Stay Cool” and is a throwback to a 1980’s John Hughes comedy, about a high school reunion. To be shot mostly on location.

I just hope she doesn't have to make out with Chevy. That would make me throw up. Sad

laugh me too!

The one thing I can say about the Polish brothers is their films always have very beautiful cinematography. Also, their films always have weird, interesting plots, almost like Tim Burton mixed with the Coen brothers... I only hope this film turns out to be as well made as their other films.

Jon Cryer, William H. Macy, Leslie Mann and James Spader star in Warner Bros.' family comedy adventure "Shorts," directed by Robert Rodriguez from his own screenplay.
Rodriguez ("Spy Kids" trilogy) is also producing the film with Elizabeth Avellan under their Troublemaker Studios banner. Dan Lin, Hunt Lowry and Stacy Cohen exec produce the film, which is starting production in Austin, Texas.

Warner Bros., which is producing in association with Abu Dhabi Media Co. and Media Rights Capital, announced the cast Thursday. Jimmy Bennett, Kat Dennings, Trevor Gagnon, Leo Howard, Devon Gearhart, Rebel Rodriguez, Jake Short and Jolie Vanier also star.

"Shorts" is set in a suburb where all the houses look the same and everyone works for Black Box, manufacturer of the ultimate communication and do-it-all gadget. Chaos follows when an 11-year-old boy is hit in the head with a rainbow-colored rock that grants wishes to anyone who holds it.

Rodriguez is serving as his own director of photography, editor and visual effects supervisor.

Cryer, who's on hiatus from "Two and a Half Men," recently joined the cast of the Polish brothers comedy "Stay Cool" with Winona Ryder, Sean Austin and Chevy Chase.

I emailed David Mullen, the cinematographer for this film. I asked about the plot and Winona's character. This is what he said...

I can't really go into details other than she's the main female character in this high school reunion story.

Well. the cast list says he plays Principal Marshal... I figured he'd either be the principal or a teacher.

As for the film's budget, I've seen nothing said about how much it will cost. However, my guess is it will be a very, very small one. The most expensive film the Polish Brothers have made so far is "The Astronaut Farmer" at $13,000,000. So, I doubt it will go beyond that.
