I saw a promo/ trailer on television this morning!!! It was so nice to hear "starring Winona Ryder" coming from the TV again!!!

Bret Easton Ellis Unleashes Gregor Jordan’s ‘The Informers’

Ask acclaimed novelist Bret Easton Ellis what “The Informers” is about, and you get nearly a minute of silences, false starts, and heavy exhaling.

“Um…A week in the lives of a group of people in Los Angeles in 1983, focusing mainly on…I guess, a trio of guys…” he eventually attempts, before scampering for a copy of the 1994 novel that serves as the basis for the new film. “Um…I’ve got a paperback of the book here. What does this say? No, that’s not a good synopsis either.”


“You’ve seen it. What do you think it’s about?” the writer of “Less Than Zero” and “American Psycho” finally asks.

Well, on the surface, the film stars Mickey Rourke, Winona Ryder, Kim Basinger and Billy Bob Thornton and tells several stories about a kidnapping, a burnt-out rock star, and a father and son trying to find common ground. But all that fades into the background ultimately, as the film’s atmosphere takes precedence.

“It’s a mood piece, totally,” explains Easton Ellis. “I’ve been involved with it from the very beginning. And so, it was a learning lesson. I learned a lot about moviemaking, a lot about compromise. A lot about the process.”

Now, “Informers” is hitting theaters primarily as the work of “Buffalo Soldiers” director Gregor Jordan – which is particularly strange to Easton Ellis since he’s been living with the film’s sultry, sinful characters for a decade-and-a-half. “The director shot it a certain way, and he made all these choices to drop certain stuff, and focus on this. As a writer, you definitely feel a certain lack of control.”

And so, even though he serves as the film’s main screenwriter and executive producer, Easton Ellis is trying to get more comfortable saying that “Informers” as it hits theaters is principally Jordan’s vision. “It’s a painful process. I’ve seen about a hundred different versions of ‘The Informers,’ once the film was assembled,” he remembers. “But I like the movie, I’ll stand by it.”

“The script that I wrote is not really on the screen,” he explains. “What was weird about watching this movie was that it was based on a book of mine; it’s the first one that I adapted myself. Yet, it’s very different from what I imagined it would be.”

As many actors, directors and writers like to say, a movie is like your child. And sometimes, people see your children a bit differently than you do.

“Yeah, but I don’t want children, I’ve never wanted children,” Easton Ellis said with a laugh. “I don’t compare my books to children.”

I think the trailer for this looks really cool!!! The whole thing looks like a great concept. It's a real shame about the bad reviews from Sundance.

I can totally understand why Winona signed up for this. If you look at the concept and the cast I think there is a lot of potential here. It's going to be a real shame if it is just a collection of beautifully shot scenes which doesn't work as a story.

My local paper today gave it 1 1/2 stars. The reviewer said this film must be a joke, and anyone who takes it seriously need therapy?

but as beeing a german production it still has no german release date....

Premise Assorted debauched types crisscross Los Angeles: A drug-addled rocker screws underage men and women; barely of-age kids screw each other; parents screw their kids’ friends; Mickey Rourke shows up to botch a kidnapping; and a mysterious virus rages through Beverly Hills. (It’s 1983.)
Redeeming quality Winona Ryder, who in the late ’80s might have played the ingenue role, cast against type as a news anchor.
Sobering moment Preppie Graham (Jon Foster) nonplussed to find his girlfriend (Amber Heard) participating in a foursome without him.
Glib soundtrack selection trivializing minor character’s death “Shadows of the Night,” Pat Benatar, the favorite song of a character killed in a car accident, played at his funeral. Friends immediately complain that he had lousy taste in music.
Classy dialogue “Wow, this isn’t just a thing. You actually…care about her.”
Lesson learned Threesomes, okay. Foursomes, not okay.

The Informers opens Friday.

I can't fully remember but think Leonard Nimoy observed he had quite a hard time acting after he got famous for Spock: no one believed he could do other characters - especially in the US, while european people don't typecast as much.....

So Winona is an actress - and a great one - she can play any role. So why "against her type"

Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke perform their usual near-perfect acting.  They are as fascinating and as sickening as they ever were in any film.  Winona Ryder is also good, but she has even less screen time than the other “Big Three” and they have little time to begin with.  Even worse, their parts are not extremely significant.  One would almost say their skills are wasted.

Next to that Winona was mentioned in the last New Yorker were they had a short bit about Ellis - he said Winona was always rushing out of the set to smoke....

The Informers with Mickey Rourke on Blu-ray in August

The Informers starring Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder and Mickey Rourke is coming to Blu-ray Disc and DVD on August 25.

The film is set in 1980s Los Angeles where sex, drugs and a lust for power come to a head and was an official 2009 Sundance Film Festival selection.

On Blu-ray, The Informers will be offered in 2.4:1 1080p video and 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio.

A Director & Cast Commentary and Human Intersections: Making The Informers featurette are the only bonus features slated to be included on the disc.
