I was lucky enough to get to talk to an actress names Marilyn Spanier who played Winona's social worker at the end of "Girl, Interrupted." You know that scene that goes;"Is that your long term plan, to work in retail? "...My plan- No." "Then what do you plan to do?""... I plan to write." Marilyn is the lady with the glasses! I found her address and figured what heck I'll write her and see if I get a respose and I did!!

I was just thrilled to get to talk to somone involved with that film. It's one of my favorites and so I asked her about her expirence and working with Winona. Here's what she said:
Hi Chris,
I'm impressed how much you seem to love the film! They cut out about 2/3 of my lines and Winona's as well (in that scene). Although I would have preferred all of our lines to remain in the film, I was happy with the results of the scene. The lines they cut showed Susanna Kaysen to still be a bit arguementative and a bit uppity to the powers that be (at that instituition). I think the director just wanted to show her having learned self control and make it seem that she was totally cured (from whatever they believed they cured her of).
"Girl, Interrupted." was quite a while ago, but I still have vivid and pleasant memories of the film shoot. As to Winona, she was lovely. I think she was about 28 years old when we did the film, but she looked about 15. She was very beautiful. She probably had makeup on, but didn't look like she had any on. She's just a natural beauty. She was very sweet to me, although we didn't talk a lot. I filmed at the end of March, near the end of filming and I think that Jim Mangold, the director and the producers (his wife being one of them) were eager to just work quickly and get the film completed, so there was not much socializing.
Winona was dating Mat Damon at that time. He didn't come to the set when I was there, but she did speak to him on her cell, when we broke for camera changes.
She was very considerate. She was kind and sweet and I enjoyed working with her. She is wonderful actress. She seemed humbled to work with Vanessa Redgrave. She said something that gave me that impression.
I don't know much more about Winona, other than what I mentioned.
Many of the stars amended their lines. Once I watched the film while looking at the screenplay and noticed lots of changes. They got the gist of the lines, but changed much of them. In my scene, we pretty much did the scene as it was written.
Best wished, Marilyn
