I just watched this film... sad no Seeing this made me feel so sad for Winona. I just wonder if we'll ever get our old Winona back. I feel like I wasn't even watching the same actor as in "Girl, Interrupted," "Little Women" and "Mermaids." It's really like the person I was watching was playing a characature of Winona Ryder. Though, she did have her moments, I'm sorry to say most of the film and her scenes were simply not good. I don't know whether it's her acting, the writing, the plot... or all of them. I'm really at a loss for words here. All I do know is that all these flops make me wonder if she can ever recover... It's just so very sad. Cry I miss what she used to be. But I guess people and times change. Though, I'm always hoping the best for her and I hope one day she will get the right role and be able to shine once more. I just hope that time comes soon! sad yes

I think she's not so good unless it's something she feels strongly about. And most of the movies she's done lately are probably just stuff she's doing just to keep working.

I was thinking the same thing. It makes me think of her involvment and her feelings towards "Girl, Interrupted." I wish she could find a project like that again. It's just so sad to watch her make flop after flop, because I know she can do better than this. Even though it was nice to see her, I'd rather her not work and find great projects then make films like this just to work.

I totally agree with you Chris B. The problem in my opinion is that if I would be a movie producer and see how Winona's movies and her acting went the last time I wouldn't hire her for a big project. I mean with Darwin Awards, Sex And Death and now Last Word with only some spare highlights in Scanner Darkly and The Ten - but even the last were not financially succesful. As I said before the main risk is that Winona ends up as C-List actress for direct-to-DVD movies. My hopes are that she stops doing this kind of movies - and never go to Sundance again, it come to believe this film festival is bad luck for Winona.... Sad

And comming to this year: Informers allready fell thru.....in Pippa Lee she only has a cameo.....Star Trek - even if it might be a good Trek - will not have any great acting for Winona.....and Stay Cool could likely be the next direct-to-DVD candidate.... sad yes

I think with most of the last movies she wanted to get back thru comedy....maybe as she thought she started with beetlejuice and heathers. But the current ones just were weird and - one fact I notice - rely too much on Winona wearing less. I mean in her great days she mostly wore wide shirts - like in GI - and made her acting speak. But lately her boobs just jump at you from the screen - even if it's nice to watch - it's not what want too see in her movies. Winona should act - and not show off! Maybe it's an age womens thing.....

So....no comeback this year.....and so far no projects for the next.....

I haven't seen this film yet but I was looking forward to it...one, she looks great (yes, we love her boobs) but also the storyline seemed unique and the role a major one...I don't want to give up on her yet (nor am I suggesting others have)...
I have been as critical as anyone about the post-trial films, but isn't it better to be working than not?  Surely she cannot take the full blame for these dogs, given the writers, directors, producers, other actors, etc.
We won't ever see another "Mermaids" or "Reality Bites"...simple passage of time prohibits that...but she has a long time ahead of her and still has the chance to make some great movies...

Thats a difficult question, DrJoseph. I rather see Winona in well-acted and prominent movies than in direct-to-DVD movies of dubious quality.

I know that Winona is now too old to play the parts she used to play in the 90s - but that doesn't mean she should stop trying to get quality roles. True she would be too old now to play roles like Abigail Williams or Susanna Kaysen - her best roles so far IMHO - but that kind of quality she should go after.

On your last sentence I agree with you....hopefully Winona will back with great movies soon.... happy yes happy yes happy yes

Funny how trailers make a film seem completely different from what it actually is.

The Last Word
>> Image Entertainment, 2009

Winona Ryder is fun and quirky, but Geofffey Haley's film mutes her so thoroughly, she just as easily could be anyone else. It's not a good thing to go from standing out to blending in. The only thing standing out is her cleavage, which Haley shows at every opportunity. It's almost as if he wanted to hire a pair of breasts and not an actress. Ryder plays Charlotte, whose brother killed himself. At his funeral, she meets Evan ( Wes Bentley), who says he is a college friend. He isn't. Evan is a failed poet who makes a living writing profound suicide notes, and he wrote her brother's. Charlotte pursues Evan, and he keeps secret his real relationship with her brother. This is billed as a romantic comedy. If it truly was a comedy, Ryder might have cut loose. It's a drama, a doleful one. It's good to see Ryder. She is missed. But this doesn't do her justice. Ray Romano, however, has good lines and moments as a client of Evan's. R, for language.

I liked this movie...easily her best picture since Mr. Deeds...a leading role where she gets to showcase both her beauty and her acting skills...we have all seen the boobage already but her Charlotte (a favorite character name for her) is also energetic, flighty, sexy, smart and vulnerable at various points...and Ray Romano surprises with some black humor we have not seen in his work to date...
Go rent it!  Three and 1/2 stars...

Saw it yesterday after my DVD arrived surprisingly fast from the US...

WARNING: SPOILERS!!!

The movie shows a gritty realism mostly missed in Hollywood romances - Charlotte's and Evan's relationship starts like A Midsummer Nights Dream but then - like waking from a dream - you startle and you're back to reality. Gladly Last Word isn't going with Hollywood cliché were after much crying and "man-running-after-the woman" they life happy ever after. This is more real - as most relations are short and don't work out - but also showing they're not to be missed. What startled me personally is that Evan is in some respects similar to me when it comes to women....
All actors show some nice acting - Winona in her most interesting character for quite some time.
